HEALTH BENEFITS OF GUAVA and MY FAVORITE STRAWBERRY GUAVA

I saw my Guava Soup recipe on my 'popular post' list, last week. I am surprised to saw my 2 yrs old post got your attention but it also hit me to one of my post drafts that been been queuing since...uhm well since.. 2010?! X_X. How time flies! LOL.
To make it worst, I said on that post that I will talk about the health benefits of Guava on the next post too! Big time. I should finish the post draft before the Guava recipe appears again on my popular post list and you read what I promised you there. Haha.
Well, I sure tried that for the last couple days and am glad I finally can post it today. So aye aye captain, lets go to the topic right meow. YAY.

Guava is one of my fav fruit and since I live in tropical country, it easy to find it.

From all types of Guavas, my fav are "Red" guava like shown in the picture above- bought them in the traditional market this morning and couldn't get the bigger size and as you read on my title, another type of Guava on my favorite list is definitely the strawberry Guava.

Its called Strawberry guava because this red-fruited variety has an excellent strawberry like flavor

I used to call them Jambu England- as the seller told me.I was kinda raised my eyebrows when I heard how they named them-makes these tropical fruits comes from a non tropical country so to my curiosity I decide to investigate more and found out that Strawberry guava was originate from Colombia and Brazil, I found out also that Psidium cattleilanum  a.k.a Strawberry Guava named in honor a notable English horticulturist Sir William Cattley. Still according to my source, the strawberry guava also commonly known as Cattley Guava or Peruvian Guava- I guess those names are a bit hard to be spelled for local so they just call them Jambu England or England Guava in English for practicality reason.

Anyway, if you are not familiar with strawberry guava. Here's how they look like.

I have the tree at my front yard besides the mango tree and also Durian tree- my brother Rio, just planted last week.

I bought the Strawberry guava tree about 3 years ago, it cost almost $40. Glad it grows on the new soil I also bought along with the tree coz me and my family like the taste very much, even the kids in my neighborhood likes them. Those kids like to pick the fruits even when they are not ripe yet and yea so its everybody's tree now. Its okay, hehehe.

As you can see the fruits are  small, to 1-2 inch around. The strawberry guava I have at home is the 'Longpipes' variety so the fruit turns red when ripe. The fruit will fall and disappear quickly into the soil if it is not picked.

Here's the strawberry guava my other brother Angga picked for me- fresh from the tree. Sorry for the poor quality pic. I took the pic when I type this with my webcam and forgot to clean the lens. D'oh.

Because the tree and the fruits looks pretty, some might prefer to use the tree just for their house ornament but we like the fruit so its not just an ornament at our house.

This dark red skinned guava tastes sweet, a bit sour and very juicy with very soft and sweet pulp - excellent strawberry like flavor . The seed are small and white in color.

You might ask why I like and fav Guava. Its because of its richness in nutrients. Guava has brilliant health benefits.

"A few guavas in the season keeps the doctor away for the whole year"

Guava is very rich of vitamins, protein and minerals with no cholesterol and less digestible carbohydrates is very filling and satisfies appetite very easily.

Because of its richness in nutrients, Guava also helps people who want to lose weight but ironically it helps gaining weight in lean or thin people. They keeps your metabolism right helping proper absorption of nutrients.

When I am doing my research for guava a.k.a browsing :D, it said that guava leaf extract helps control diabetes. From another source, it said that Guava was used for century to treat diabetes in China.

I am not diabetic but I have diabetes gen in the family so I always interesting with how to treat and most importantly how to prevent diabetes  and that sounds like a good news for me so again to my curiosity I investigate it more and found out that recent study conducted in rats shown eating guava with its skin increase blood sugar  91% so if you have high blood sugar make sure you peel off its skin and eat before it too ripe. (research published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research and conducted by researchers at the Medicinal Research Laboratory of the University of Allahabad blood sugar levels in rats injected with guava peel extract rose by 91% in sub-diabetic rats within two hours of administration and by 27% in normal rats after eight hours of administration)

However do eat the Guava.
Guava has like 4 times vitamin C of one Orange-which also my fav fruit actually. It is also less acidic and very high in fiber- contains almost 9grams of fiber per cup so it also helps to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. Guava also full of iron, Calsium besides other beneficial vitamins.

Another good news for me is how Guava rich of a carotenoids called the lypocene. The lypocene can reduce the risk of cancer and since I have cancer gen in my family also, any healthy foods that can prevent cancer are always on my top food list.

And those who wants to have healthy looking skin, you gonna like this. Do you know that being rich of astringent, Guava- especially immature guava and guava leafs, can improve the texture and the health of your skin.
How so?
Astringents shrink and dissolve the oil in the skin as they  are responsible for shrinking tissues. Guava also can also keep the skin glowing, fresh and wrinkle free since Guava rich of vitamin A, B, C and the mineral potassium.
Not only for your skin, Astringents are also alkaline in nature which help guava fight bacterial infections such as diarrhea and dysentery.

With so many health benefits, this very simple yet very tasty Guava, is easy to eat too.

Biting off a piece of the rind and sucking out the insides that's how I like to eat the strawberry guava.

When it comes to "Red' guava-and since I always prefer the medium rip one, I use different methods: I slice it and dip it into a peanut sauce or just eat it like an apple.
I always like to eat the Guava with the skin and the seeds too coz they are very crunchy and tasty

Or I can cook the "Red" Guava and make the refreshing Guava soup like shown in the picture below.

So if you don't  have idea  what to serve this weekend- especially in a hot day like in Bandung today, why not try to cook this Guava soup.

Its easy and doesn't take much time to cook either and yes I shared the recipe  HERE

Have fun cooking, I am eating my strawberry guava here. Yum!I wish I can share them with you!

Bhu bye now but I will come back with more updates so stay tune peps, not in other "nesia" but @mignonesia. Wink. >‿♥.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CUCUMBER, LEMON, MINT AND HONEY

When  shopping  groceries in traditional market or supermarket, I prefer to buy fresh fruits and vegetables than red meat. Cucumber, lemon, carrots etc they are just a view of my must buy list.

I am not yet a vegan but I eat less less meat for my health. I think the fact that my dad died to lung cancer and my mom died to diabetes have made me much aware of my health than I used too. I care what I eat and I like browsing health articles as many as I can to make myself well informed and I like herbal remedies not only because Indonesia-where I live, is so rich with herbs, spices and fruits etc that can be used as medicine but also I can make the herbal remedies myself at home and the price is inexpensive.

I am not a doctor or a physician so the information in this article should not be considered medical advice and what I share here is mostly a resume from many health articles I read and personal experience.

Anyway, below is the cucumber I bought this morning, I tried to make them look pretty for the photo shoot hahah but mind the look because oh its so amazing what cucumber can do for your health!

This crunchy vegetables can be cleaned and eaten raw and you know what, that is actually how Sundanese likes to eat it-Raw cucumber is a part of Lalapan. Lalapan is the standard accompaniment to fried and grilled dishes in Java, always served at Sundanese restaurants and mostly serve for free! but that's not really the reason why Sundanese from generation to generation eat raw cucumber. Based on what I read on many health articles, all cooking methods reduce nutrient levels in vegetables to some degree. Many vitamins are sensitive to heat exposure and to get the full health benefits of cucumbers, you should use all parts (skin and flesh) and the best nutrients of cucumber are found in its skin.

Before I make my mouth watering imagining Sundanese dishes with its lalapan, here's health and nutritional benefits of cucumber!

Came from the same family as pumpkin, zucchini and other squashes, cucumber has many health advantages and is therefore often used in different herbal products.

This low-calorie food is more than a crunchy vegetable. Composed of mostly water, about 96 percent and packed with nutrients. Its high water content helps keep the body hydrated, helps regulate body temperature, rids the body of excess fluids. Cucumber also has cleaning properties that removes accumulated waste and toxins from our body. Cucumber, radish and bitter gourd are beneficial in diabetes.

The cucumber contains alkaline-forming minerals and is an excellent source of vitamin C and A (anti-oxidants), folate, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, silica, sulfur and lesser amounts of vitamin B complex, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and chlorine.

Silica is important for healthy connective tissue, ligaments, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and bone and very good for the skin, it improves the health of the skin and makes it naturally hydrating also helps to get a good complexion and a glowing skin and can promote to hair growth.
The potassium in cucumber makes it useful for the problem of high and low blood  pressure.
According to the American Cancer Society ,states that molybdenum has been found to be an anti-oxidant that can help prevent cancer.

Is that good! and they are just some of many  health and nutritional benefits of cucumber.

Now, what about Lemon?

Lemon is one of my fav fruits. I like to mix them into drinks to make a little zing! Oh l even love its pretty sun shine color.

The citrus fruits have more benefits than others. Lemon is considered to be one of the most alkalizing foods.

Lemon has one of the most important antioxidants in nature, vitamin C.
Lemons and lemon juice can protect your body against germs and bacteria. If you want to boost your immune system, the lime juice is very effective. Not only that, a glass of lime juice that is taken on an empty stomach in the morning has natural properties that can contribute to weight reduction. Lemon water is also good to control high blood pressure, cure and throat infection.

Lemon also contains important nutrients like potassium and  unique flavonoid compounds that have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties which is another good news for me!

Mint turns.

I use this Mint pic from Wikipedia since Mint I bought isn't look lovely in the pic due to too long photo shoot:P.

Anyway, I like adding fresh Mint leaves for garnish , what about you? I think Mint as garnish makes the food or drink much attractive with its fresh green color!

I know Mint can be use as mouth and breathe freshener but after I read in many health articles, mint actually has more to offer than that. Its strong and refreshing aroma is an excellent and quick remedy for nausea besides a good appetizer and promote digestion.

The typical aroma can cools and soothes throats, nose and other respiratory channels, its gives in cough and it is a good relaxant and gives relief in congestion skin care and good pimples etc.

Besides the cooling and soothing effect, certain enzymes present in Mint may help cure cancer. How about that!  that!

Again I use the honey  pic from Wikipedia, as mine is in the in the dark brown bottle and I already use half of it, not sufficient to make a lovely image.

Yea I can finish a bottle of honey all by myself if  I want too. I kinda have sweet tooth but since I know I have diabetes gen runs in my family and honey is three times as sweet as sugar so I should be careful and consume it in moderation instead and unlike sugar, honey is nutritious plus I use honey mostly for skin care , plus I am not a diabetic and Insya allah never will be and the last but not the least plus is.. you're not diabetic, aren't you? I surely hope you not! so enough with the chit chat, lets straight to the health benefits of honey, shall we?

Honey-as you probably know, has numerous healths benefits.
It is so popular coz everyone can eat it as jam, mix it with juice etc or with herbs for medicine. Its natural sweetener because of the glucose and fructose contents.

You can use honey as a source of energy as in a tablespoon of honey contains 64 calories, sugar only 15 calories even so, honey helps in reducing weight when you consume it with warm water or lemon juice or cinnamon for same result.
Honey also makes your body easily  maintaining blood sugar levels, muscle recuperation and glycogen restoration after a workout and unlike sugar honey contain vitamin and mineral such Vitamin C, Potassium, Calcium and Iron.

Honey can also used as antiseptic since honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
Nutraceuticals content makes honey able to effectively remove free radicals from our body so this made honey antioxidants too.

Honey have wonderful beauty aids that nourish the skin like as it rich with vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Here's some tips:

*Natural Whitening.
A face mask of egg white and honey gently removes the tan from your face.

*Firming mask
Whisk a tablespoon of honey together with an egg white, 1 teaspoon of glycerin and about 1/4 cup of flour. Smooth on the face, leave on 15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water. You will be pleased with the results.

*Fair skinTry this natural bleach. Mix orange peels (sun dried and powdered) with milk.Apply this paste for 25 minutesand wash off.

OR you can also make Fresh healthy drink.
How to make Healthy drink from Lemon, Cucumber and Honey a la Dita?

HERBAL REMEDIES: PURPLE SWEET POTATOES TO PREVENT CANCER?

I bought these Purple Sweet potatoes at the traditional market near my house.
We called it Ubi Ungu here in Indonesia or Ganola for Sundanese.
This Purple sweet potato have been grown in Mexico, Philippines and Indonesia forever.
I don't know at your place, maybe you don't find it in everyday market or they treating it as luxury item or you have to shop them in Asian groceries but I live in Indo so yes,  I can find it relatively easy with only half dollar per kilo. Very cheap for such types of nutritional items ya.:)

I've been wanting to post about the health benefits of this Purple sweet potato and share the infos with everyone here who  probably in seeking ways to lowers the risk of cancer like myself.
Do you know that Purple sweet potato or pronounce as Purple Fleshed has remarkable anti-cancer components? Hm..speaking about herbal remedy.
I say it worth to try and I did it for the past six months! ^-^

I know about the health benefits of Purple sweet potato since couple years ago. I happened to watch a business program on local TV that featured   Adi Kharisma
the owner of Sela Boga outlets and coordinator of the community of Bali rice and sweet potato growers who initiate producing Ubi(sweet potato)and made his products gaining popularity as a novelty.

So I started to browse and browse to get more info about this Purple sweet potato and I found that many articles mentioned Soyoung Lim, a doctoral student  in human nutrition at Kansas University. She working with Dr.George Wang- who lead the study researcher, studying the pigment effects of purple sweet potato .The study determined that the purple sweet potato had significantly higher anthocyanin contents compared to the other potatoes.
And what is anthocyanin? well am not the scientist so I just quoted what Lim said, "Anthocyanin is a pigment that presents the purple color in vegetable and have been epidemiologically associated with a reduced cancer risk" On further research, Lim also found that Purple sweet potato had a much higher total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity.
Sweet potatoes also may save your life if you are frequently exposed to second hand smoke.
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of Vitamins C and A by their nature- A powerful antioxidants that's work in the body nature to eliminate free radicals. Free radicals damage cells and can cause heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. Yea,  I got the AHA moment right there.:)

A part of  all those benefits that we could get, this Purple sweet potato is easy to process.
Simply washed them, steam them with skin on and in several minutes they are ready to be served for breakfast or snacks.
You can also make cake with this Purple sweet potatoes but I am not good with baking so I pass that.
I just love to see how the purple color looks after they cooked, very lovely purple color! ^^

Oh here's some tips: Storing sweet potatoes in the refrigerator will alter their flavor.
Sweet potatoes last for about two weeks when stored in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area.

Well, there you have my update for herbal remedy after sooo long, hope its informative enough. Please note that this article is not intended to provide medical advice , diagnostic or treatment tho.
Hope you all heading a nice weekend where ever you are and hope you come back visit Mig again for a special post!
I wont tell you what it is yet-its still a secret okay so I guess am just gonna WOW you.*SIGH*

Breathing Therapy & Cure for Head Ache

*This is only for the people who are breathing with their nose. Not for people who are breathing with mouth.*

The nose has a left and a right side; we use both to inhale and exhale.
Actually they are different; you would be able to feel the difference.
The right side represents the sun, left side represents the moon.
During a headache, try to close your right nose and use your left nose to breathe.
In about 5 min, your headache will go.
If you feel tired, just reverse, close your left nose and breathe through your right nose.
After a while, you will feel your mind is refreshed.
Right side belongs to 'hot', so it gets heated up easily, left side belongs to 'cold'.
Most females breathe with their left noses, so they get "cooled off" faster.
Most of the guys breathe with their right noses, they get worked up.
Do you notice the moment we wake up, which side breathes faster? Left or right?
If left is faster, you will feel tired.
So, close your left nose and use your right nose for breathing, you will get refreshed quickly.
This can be taught to kids, but it is more effective when practiced by adults.
My friend used to have bad headaches and was always visiting the doctor.
There was this period when he suffered headache literally every night, unable to study.
He took painkillers, did not work.
He decided to try out the breathing therapy here: closed his right nose and breathed through his left nose.
In less than a week, his headaches were gone! He continued the exercise for one month.
This alternative natural therapy without medication is something that he has experienced.
So, why not give it a try?
